Protecting your vision and your health
For people with diabetes, the eyes can reveal important changes long before symptoms appear. At The Monocle, our goal is to help you maintain healthy vision and catch potential issues early, so you can enjoy healthy, clear vision.
Using precise imaging and expert guidance, we monitor for early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy or macular edema. Every step of the exam is focused on helping you maintain healthy vision and make informed decisions about your care.
Prioritize your eye health and schedule your diabetic eye exam with Dr. Zaiffdeen and the team today.
The importance of diabetic eye exams
High blood sugar can cause changes in the retinal blood vessels, increasing the risk of conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. These changes often develop slowly and without symptoms, making regular eye exams critical.
Most people with diabetes should have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year, or more frequently if recommended by your optometrist. Regular exams allow us to monitor changes over time, catch issues early, and tailor care to your individual needs.
Early detection helps prevent vision loss and supports your overall health.

Our diagnostic approach
At The Monocle, we combine expertise with innovative imaging tools to give Dr. Zaiffdeen a complete view of your retina and macula. This allows us to detect changes early, track your eye health over time, and guide you in making informed decisions about your vision.
Optos retinal imaging
Our ultra-widefield imaging captures a far larger view of the retina than traditional methods, without the need for dilation.
This means we can identify subtle changes or early signs of retinal conditions while keeping your experience comfortable and straightforward. By seeing more of the retina in a single image, we can act sooner and provide care that helps preserve long-term vision.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
OCT functions like an ultrasound of the back of the eye, generating detailed cross-sectional images of the retina. It allows us to detect subtle changes associated with diabetic retinopathy or macular edema well before they affect vision.
These images provide a roadmap for monitoring your eye health, adjusting your care plan, and offering precise guidance on treatment options.
Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which high blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina. It can develop without noticeable symptoms in the early stages, making regular eye exams essential for people with diabetes.
At The Monocle, we use retinal imaging and OCT scans to spot early changes, monitor progression, and guide treatment before vision is affected. With timely detection, we can help protect your sight and support overall eye health.
Signs we watch for:
- New or abnormal blood vessel growth
- Microaneurysms or tiny blood vessel changes
- Retinal swelling or hemorrhages
Diabetic macular edema
Diabetic macular edema occurs when fluid builds up in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. This can lead to blurred or distorted vision, making everyday tasks like reading or driving more difficult.
Our imaging tools allow us to detect swelling early and track changes over time. Early identification lets us discuss management options and help you maintain clear, comfortable vision.
What we focus on:
- Detecting subtle fluid accumulation
- Monitoring vision changes over time
- Coordinating care for treatment if needed
Managing diabetic eye conditions
If we detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy or macular edema, our team works with you to manage and slow progression. Management may include:
- Referral to specialized care when needed
- Monitoring and follow-up exams
- Guidance on lifestyle and blood sugar management in partnership with your health team
Our goal is to keep your vision healthy and help you live confidently with diabetes.
At The Monocle, we combine expert care, gentle technology, and personalized guidance to protect your eyes and support your health.
